Creating The Chant (and teaching it)
"We are the Semliki Silverbacks!
Back-breaking Silverbacks!
Together one gorilla pack!
Hear us roar as we ATTACK!"
Creating It . . .
Getting the team together and organizing them in groups to create chants/songs wasn't so difficult, but having to choose one, and combine the different ideas proved to be more of a challenge. We had originally chosen a different song but halfway through we (the two house captains) decided that the current one was a lot more catchy. All we needed to do was to add a beat and some sort of rhythm...however, I don't consider myself as musical so this was a little bit difficult so we got our music teacher to help out and added some drumming.
Teaching It . . .
Here I really went out of my comfort zone, as I don't really spend much time with kids nor have very good patience. However, we managed to teach the entire school the chant and have the kids really excited about it! I printed out copies of the chant and asked the parents of the primary students to encourage them to practice it as homework. To my surprise, it worked! On the assembly day they were enthusiastic and preformed with all their hearts.
Lets reflect . . .
I was at first a little wary about standing in front of so many young people and teaching them something I wasn't so great at. However, with the help of teachers I manged to encourage them to have school spirit. I felt that I had made them come closer as a team as they learnt the chant together as a team. I look forward to creating the flag and shirts!
